Though you might commonly think that the symbolism of “nudism and nature” would be a very old natural concept , the actual idea of  “getting back to nature” as a Good Thing is relatively recent in Western thought. It had its origins in the Romantic movement and developed during the middle years of the 1800s. At the beginning of that period, “nature” had rather unfavorable connotations, being the force that civilization was trying to overcome and rise above. But by the latter part of the century, the idea had been rehabilitated and given the positive associations by people like Walt Whitman and John Muir, which it retains to this day.

Some people, of course, feel that nature is overly sentimentalized, that the state of nature in which the Noble Savage once lived in harmony with himself and his environment is just a myth engendered in the minds of relatively affluent people by the frustrations of our urban civilization, that it is not now and never was quite so good as it is made out to be.

Perhaps. It may be a myth. But none of us live without our myths. Like art, myth is one of the ways we explain us to ourselves. There is beauty, and truth, as well as pathos in our myths.

Why be naked in nature? It is, after all, not always convenient or comfortable. Sometimes the air is too cold, the sun too hot, the brambles too unforgiving of bare skin, the insects too thirsty for our blood.

But still, our skin is our largest sense organ. Wearing clothes when we don’t need them is like wearing a blindfold over our eyes or earplugs in our ears. We miss so much – the warmth of sunlight, the coolness of fog or a waterfall’s mist, the caress of the breezes, mud between our toes, a summer rain tunneling down our flanks.

Everything has a price; life is full of trade-offs. Like a street vendor in a middle-eastern bazaar, nature is always offering us incredible bargains. If we don’t want his fine, hand-made pottery today, perhaps some rare, imported silks. Because he knows we are uniquely able to appreciate the quality of his wares, he will let us have our choice for an outrageously low price.

What will we choose, if the only price nature asks today is to give up our clothes for a few hours or a day? A taste of freedom? An ample bouquet of new sensations? A feeling of connectedness and belonging to the natural world?

What is Nudism all about?

NUDISM is about being a naturist which is the same thing as a nudist. As is a nudist is a naturist. They are interchangeable terms. One part of the world prefers naturist, another part uses nudist. The bottom line is that either term refers to a person who prefers to recreate, work, relax, play games, swim, hike, visit with friends, or whatever without clothes. It creates a great feeling of comfort, relaxation, and freedom that simply cannot be achieved with the mental and physical encumbrances of clothing. Nudists will agree on this point, but will also point out that the acceptance of this truth can only be realized through participation, not through reading or thinking about it, or discussing it with others. It is an experiential reality.

Why do people become Nudist?

There are probably many answers to this question, almost as many as there are nudists. Some like to refer to the fact that they were born that way. Yes, some even try it for the wrong reasons, but it quickly becomes evident that sex is not what it is about. If someone attempts to participate for this reason they are soon disappointed and leave on their own. Respectful and courteous behavior toward others is expected. Disrespectful behavior is not tolerated. Naturism is about freedom, enjoyment, and getting in touch with yourself and the real personality in others. At first it can be an exciting or even fearful experience simply due to the mental attitude or baggage we bring with us. The negatives quickly melt away to be replaced with a wonderful feeling of acceptance of yourself and others.

Is it wrong?

Absolutely and unequivocally NO! This “wrong” judgment and image of the human body, i.e., of ourselves, is the result of misguided and erroneous, but non-the-less dominant cultural teachings. Dominant cultural precepts and attitudes have often been wrong in the past. Just consider such subjects as flat earth vs round earth, earth as the center of the universe, that people could be evil witches and thus should be burned at the stake or drowned, that Blacks were somehow subhuman and therefore slavery was ok, that Native Americans were also subhuman and should be exterminated. More recent errors of a dominant culture are the Vietnam War, which was thought to be right and necessary, that women do not have the same rights as men. Nudism/naturism is also being subjected to this kind of “thinking,” i.e., seeing the human body or being nude socially as harmful, unacceptable, or somehow obscene or indecent. There is a self-righteousness, arrogance, and ignorance in this kind of thinking that should not be accepted no matter what the times or the subject matter. Nudism may not appeal to everyone as sports and opera do not appeal to everyone, but we all should have the right to choose and participate equally and fairly with others without prejudice.

What can I expect to get out of joining in social nudism?

The dominant attitude toward our bodies and thus ourselves is not only wrong, and disrespectful, but it is harmful to our self image, confidence, and healthy social interaction. Those three aspects are most often referred to as improvements and pluses in their lives by individuals after becoming involved in the nudist lifestyle. This is especially true among nudist children as witnessed by friends, parents, and even researchers. Children are in the early stages of developing attitudes that will follow them throughout their lives. It is far better for them to develop a healthy attitude while young than to try to change later in life when it is so difficult. It is really more harmful to instill the present dominant cultural fears, misinformation, inhibitions into children.

Social nudism is a sense of freedom, comfort and relaxation that cannot be achieved when confined physically and mentally in clothing. People, generally, are friendlier and interact more easily and quickly when nude. By meeting at clubs or beaches with people from all over the country and the world there is a kind of national and international camaraderie that develops. It is an active, take control way to shed oneself of fear and shame regarding our bodies. After being a nudist for a while the snickering, immature attitude of society toward our bodies and their parts, and that of regarding our bodies as a product to be kept secret and doled out in small profitable pieces takes on a kind unsophisticated foolishness.

A secret nudist or naturist is one who travels lightly across the land, using no more than the usually slight width of their bodies for the time they need to pass, always at one with Nature and with all living things. They take nothing but the air they breathe, leave nothing but footprints in the sand. They sense all around them, they are all-knowing and all-seeing, for they know the language of the earth and of the sea and of the sky. They listen for whispers on the wind, read the patterns of the trail and understand the calls of the birds, and of the beasts.

By day and night they travel, naked and not ashamed, unburdened by cloak or boot, exposed to wind and rain, cloud and sun, touched yet untroubled by the colds of winter or the teeth of the storm. They are of all places, where the sea talks to the land and where the mountain touches the stars, of the dark forest and the open plain. Of the land they are wisdom, every stream, every tree, every road, all is their memory, for nothing is unknown to them. Careful is their motto, no stone shall be left unturned and none shall see them pass.

Many are their number yet their number is not known for secrecy is their word. Their calling is one alone, and only one, and they seek the challenge of places unknown, of places ancient where none may go, yet they dare the places where many may be found. They are the silent ghosts of the night, invisible shadows of the day, they are secret naturists.

POPULAR NUDIST ACTIVITIES:

There is no limit to the number of activities you can do as a secret naturist. In just about every instance, if you can do if clothed you can also do it in secret naturist fashion, totally nude.
